8. Best Bespoke Interior Designer 2023 (The Netherlands): Pleun van Akkerveeken Based in Culemborg in the heart of the Netherlands, you’ll find the unique world of interior designer, Pleun van Akkerveeken. The showroom of the design and decoration company, Studio Pleun Interiors, is full of beautiful fabrics and exclusive wallpapers ready to make houses into homes. Listening to her clients' ideas, while taking into account both mood and personality, Pleun creates stunning yet practical design solutions. We chat with Pleun and take a look at her company in more detail. Pleun van Akkerveeken has over 25 years of experience in the field of interior design. Founding her own styling business back in 2007, Pleun defined her core values as service, balance, partnership, harmony, hard work, freedom, impact, and transparency. Although the business has evolved to offer a full interior design service, to this day Pleun and her team still stay true to those values. She tells us, “My business idea supports my vision by offering good quality, well-made soft furnishings within a balanced colour palette to create an overall interior concept. My designs and decisions are grounded in years of experience and personal development and that’s repaid by the confidence and trust that my clients have in me.” Pleun works with residential clients, many of whom live in old and sometimes historical buildings. She revels in creating warm, homely designs that mirror the personal taste of each client. Offering a full range of design services, Pleun also creates customised products in-house. She explains, “One of my proudest achievements to date is the creation of our made-to-order curtain service. I’ve realised over the years that few designers have the ability to measure up and make curtains for old windows with their unusual shapes.” All the made-to-measure curtains are being sewn locally and Pleun also offers matching or coordinated cushions and furniture upholstery. Working with a small team of artisans, Pleun is very hands-on, from the initial consultation with the client, through to the final delivery of the design and products. So what trends is Pleun seeing in the interior design industry at the moment? She says, “Using sustainable products and recycled or 100% natural fibres is becoming much more popular. Pure linen upholstery fabrics are back in fashion and we’re even seeing curtain material made from recycled plastic bottles. These developments appear to be Europewide as fabric designers look for more sustainable ways to produce and print fabric too.” After spending so much time in our homes over the last few years, Pleun is also noticing a growing demand for her services as more people become drawn to the idea of personalised living spaces. Pleun tells us about the culture at Studio Pleun Interiors: “It’s a small company and the culture is very casual and creative although we’re still hard-working and have an obsessive attention to detail. I adore working with lovely fabrics every day and creating new concepts for my clients. As for any entrepreneur, the key is to find the perfect work-life balance. If I’m recruiting a new member of staff, I always look for passion first.” In the immediate future, Studio Pleun Interiors will be working on two major projects. The first is an old farmhouse that’s been completely renovated. The second is a modern sustainable house using only natural environmental friendly products creating a cosy decor.
