About Us Introduction EU Business News is delighted to announce the inaugural edition of the European CEO of the Year Awards. The European CEO of the Year Awards proudly acknowledge and honour top-tier CEOs who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, strategic vision, and a profound impact on their organisations and industries. These awards celebrate the exemplary corporate leadership, strategic foresight, and unparalleled contributions of these exceptional individuals. The European region has encountered an array of financial challenges of varying degrees, which have had a significant impact on business policies and developments. Nevertheless, the current landscape is marked by a growing sense of optimism, as these challenges are gradually being surmounted. In 2024, it is anticipated that European businesses will shift their focus towards making significant investments through acquisitions and Venture Capital funding, to foster growth and attain a competitive advantage over their peers. Notably, a considerable proportion of European CEOs are optimistic about the financial outlook of their respective organisations in the upcoming year. In a world where the role of a CEO extends far beyond boardroom decisions, these awards recognise the dynamic nature of modern leadership. The role of the CEO is evolving rapidly, and it is now more important than ever for them to lead rapid transformation. The CEO’s primary responsibility should be to assess market trends and adapt to new situations. However, this also means that the characteristics that define a successful CEO need to evolve as well. The trend of appointing individuals with non-traditional backgrounds as CEOs is on the rise, contributing to a more diverse business leadership landscape. To succeed as a CEO in today’s world, possessing the skills to conquer obstacles, navigate difficulties, and plan for the future is crucial. Embracing technology and implementing AI into business operations is essential for a company’s success. With Italy and the UK leading the region in recognising the importance of AI, other European countries are also realising its significance. As a result, CEOs in Europe must find ways to incorporate technological advancements into their business strategies. AI is a crucial building block for the future and will shape policies at the business and national levels. Therefore, a successful CEO must confidently prioritise innovation and strategic planning to stay ahead of the game. With today’s business landscape defined by innovation, resilience, and transformative leadership, the European CEO of the Year Awards emerges as a beacon, illuminating the extraordinary individuals who navigate the complex landscapes of business with unparalleled skill and vision. The awards reflect the ever-evolving nature of leadership, a catalyst for inspiration, and a driving force behind the continuous pursuit of excellence in the modern business era. Therefore, the European CEO of the Year Awards are not just a recognition ceremony; they represent a tribute to the leaders who, through their unwavering commitment, have become architects of success, shaping the trajectory of their organisations and inspiring others to reach new heights. www.eubusinessnews.com

“If the cost for a packaged cigarette is €5.25, we found that consumers were happy to pay €6 if a pocket ashtray was included. This is now being pushed to the tobacco companies to provide smokers with a pocket ashtray.” In 2020, off the back of these findings, Alice had a large tobacco company get in touch as it wanted to test Nano-bin with its consumers. The company initially ordered 10,000 items and put them in 100 shops all over Sweden. The plan was to find out if the smokers wanted to use Nano-bin and the prediction was that the 10,000 units would take around a week, or possibly more, to sell out. Instead, Nano-bin sold out in a few hours prompting the company to place a further order for 40,000 units! Alice tells us, “We are now talking to the next big tobacco company who is ordering 100,000 a week. This is just for the Nordic markets.” Currently, Nano-bin is available from retail shops, kiosks, petrol stations, pubs, and restaurants – in fact, anywhere that sells cigarettes usually has Nano-bin on its shelves alongside. Nano-bin recently gained recognition in the Scandinavian Enterprise Awards 2022 for its ingenuity and innovation, being bestowed with the title of Best Eco-Friendly Ashtray Company 2022. This award is testament to the dedication and hard work of Alice and the talented team who helped to bring Nano-bin into fruition. Right now, it seems that Nano-bin has conquered Europe, but it is certainly on the cards for it to take the world by storm and Alice is already in talks with several companies who want to start stocking the item in their own countries. “We had a breakthrough in the US market,” she tells us. “A sales and distribution company has contacted us and wants to put Nanobin on the US market. It is one of the big retail companies that is asking for the product all over the continent. We have, after careful consideration, found a production company that can produce the quantities that are requested. The next step is to seek an investor who can help us with cash flow. It is an exciting step forward!” Founded by serial entrepreneur, Alice Hertz Dahl found a way to combine her passion for the environment and all things ecofriendly with her vast experience as a manager for European Food companies – such as Scan, Starbucks and W&A – and her gift for accurately evaluation and understanding consumer needs. It all began when Alice, a farmer’s daughter, was a new resident in Stockholm. Late one night, whilst waiting for the bus, she began to count how many cigarette butts she could see littering the streets and was surprised when she reached a staggeringly high number. Alice pondered that surely there must be a better way to dispose of our cigarette butts and keep the streets cleaner – and Nano-bin was born! “Roughly 540,000,000 cigarette butts are thrown on the ground per hour around the world,” exclaims Alice. “If placed in a row, it would take us around the equator in just three hours. Something needed to happen!” The Berlin-based start-up is now the third company that Alice has founded and, as a report from the EU shows that in Europe alone we spend £13 billion a year to clean up cigarette butts, meaning every EU citizen pays €20 per year towards this, it could not have come soon enough. ith Nano-bin, smokers now have a convenient way to dispose of their cigarette butts with this mobile non-flammable, airtight ashtray, which empowers smokers to both enjoy their vice and to care about the world around them. ith Nano-bin, smokers now have a convenient way to dispose of their cigarette butts with this mobile non-flammable, airtight ashtray, which empowers smokers to both enjoy their vice and to care about the world around them. It takes approximately seven years for a cigarette butt to dissolve and, in the meantime, it contaminates the surrounding water and soil.” Alice’s handy solution, Nano-bin, is a fully recyclable and biodegradable tube that will hold up to 20 cigarette butts. Designed to make it easier for smokers to dispose of their cigarettes correctly, patent applied, environmentally friendly, non-flammable, and completely odourless pocket ashtray can be filled with butts, stored, and disposed of along with other waste at a convenient time. Currently the only product on the market of its kind, Nanobin incorporates some clever technology to ensure that it is ecofriendly. For example, it is produced from well paper and also has an oxygen eater on the inside, meaning it is free from the odours that most pocket ashtrays emit! What’s more, it comes in an array of attractive colours and styles, and can even carry advertising messages and branding, making it an essential accessory to a busy smoker’s life. “It’s also about empowering smokers around the world and embracing them in the modern movement of Enjoy & Care,” elaborates Alice. “Why not do your part to save the planet?” Much research has been conducted by Alice and her team at Nano-bin and the findings were not surprising. In a survey of 5000 smokers around Europe, 74% are happy to pay for a convenient pocket ashtray, costing approximately £1, or €1. This led to Alice’s idea of selling the Nano-bin as an add-on accessory to a packet of cigarettes. “This money is better spent elsewhere.” she elaborates. “We shall not blame or shame smokers, but this has created high costs for our society along with harm to the environment.
