Founded in 2014, and initially focusing exclusively on New Zealand, the firm now has a global following and is looking to a bright and lucrative future. We find out more about the company as it finds success in the recent European Travel Awards 2025. Kolja and Lilith Chromow, had been living in New Zealand for a couple of years and loved the relaxed lifestyle of travelling this beautiful country in a van. Seeing a gap in the campervan market and wanting to share their experience of ‘life on the road’ with others, the ambitious couple’s goal was to make this experience easier to plan and book for customers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. To this end, they created a website where customers could find all different rental companies offering vans, as well as information about travelling in a van, all the rules and regulations needed, and useful information such as choosing the right van size and planning the perfect trip. Today, CamperOase has grown significantly having gone from simply offering campervans in New Zealand, to expanding its horizons to include Australia, USA, Canada, Namibia, South Africa and Europe, with more than 50 companies currently involved as partners. The team grew from just two to 25 people, but the offering hasn’t changed – expert advice with a highly personal service. The travel industry is notoriously competitive which means that CamperOase must differentiate from competitors in order to stand out. Lilith tells us more about what makes the firm so unique. “To begin with, we don't have an automised booking engine - we have real people with a lot of travel experience thinking about your plans,” she explains. “All our customer service staff have been travelling in vans and know the destinations personally themselves. We have experts for every country and also specialists for travelling with a 4x4 or for families and we tell you if we think that this vehicle might not be the best match for your needs -whereas a booking engine would merely just give you a price on the vehicle you request.” Driven by providing a great experience, the team at CamperOase will inform clients if they can save a lot of money by changing little things on their travel trips or dates. They also explain the pros and cons of all the different companies and vehicles available. And, as the firm doesn't work fully automised, it can also offer vans from smaller companies that don't provide automised data and are therefore often overlooked. Lilith states: “When other platforms are fully booked, we will still have something to offer the customer. “With all the time and effort that we put into every customer you may think that this will cost a lot of money. But in fact, we can sell the motorhomes for the same or a slightly lower price as the companies themselves.” CamperOase also stands out from others within the industry by embracing the channels that its customers prefer to use, and by delivering information in an informative yet entertaining way, including a podcast and a YouTube channel to offer high quality content that engages its target demographic. The dedicated team is the backbone at CamperOase. With all staff working from home, in many different countries, some being on the road travelling permanently, they connect video links and meetings, ensuring no-one is ever alone, and being living proof that travelling doesn’t mean a permanent break from the real world, but rather something that can be combined for a healthy work/life balance.
