For more on this, we caught up with Adrian. In 1922, James Flynn, Adrian’s greatgrandfather, began as a sole trader delivering painting and decorating services to the local region of Dundalk. Charlie, his son, then started to work with his father when he was old enough, eventually setting up on his own after his father passed away at a young age. Another James Flynn (Adrian’s farther) and Charlie’s son – would then also work with his father for many years, before taking other jobs across the industry and then eventually working on his own for over 40 years as a contractor, just as his namesake grandfather had done years before. Adrian, started out working with his father James Flynn, the second, serving his time and learning the trade. James, commonly known as Jimmy, was a very successful contractor employing 8 – 10 people over many decades. However, when recession hit Ireland in the mid-1980s, Adrian made the decision to go to America, and there he worked on a number of high-end projects in coveted locations such as Park Avenue and 5th Avenue in New York. This was followed by stints in the UK – working in London and Manchester – and France, where he was contracted to work on Disneyland Paris when it was being built. Returning home to Ireland, Adrian again worked with his father, before setting out as a contractor on his own back in 2017. Adrian is hardly alone, however, given he has built a small team of professional decorators to support him across projects, a team whose combined experience adds up to around the same amount of time Flynn’s Painting & Decorating has been a trusted name across Ireland. Beyond his team, Adrian also has the three preceding generations there in spirit, inspiring him to deliver the highest quality painting services.
