Q3 2025

Jul22493 15. Opening its doors in August 1993, Smørum Golfklub (SGK) has spent the last 32 years as a pillar of both the local communities in Denmark and the wider golfing world. Guided by its motto: “Open to everyone – good enough for the best”, SGK is today the largest golf club in Denmark, with 51 holes spread across several courses and both indoor and outdoor putting greens. As if this was not enough already, SGK is also continuously evolving with the addition of attractive facilities designed to appeal to players of all levels. Below, we take a closer look at the club. Balancing a good social environment with world-class amenities, Smørum Golfklub has been designed to appeal to the golfer in everyone. Recognising that the sport is broad and thus appealing to all types of people, SGK serves newcomers and experienced professionals alike, offering everything from a ‘Pay & Play’ – where anyone can come in, hire equipment and balls, and either play on a nine-hole course or a pitchand-put six-hole course – to a fully-fledged membership option with course access based on ability. What sets SGK apart is not only the sheer amount of facilities it has, but also the quality underpinning them all. These range from a three-loop, 27-hole course through to a ninehole intermediate course and three putting greens. A covered driving range developed with TopTracer has also just been opened, complete with 69 covered bays adorned with TopTracer fenders. This, however, is not the only new addition to SGK as a shortgame area has also been developed recently, complete with a large approach green. Ongoing developments such as this have resulted in SGK going from 2,350 members to 2,850 members over the last five years, with a waiting list of approximately 280 already filling up ahead of 2026. Such an increase in memberships may cause questions about the preservation of the club’s environment, but a number of initiatives have been spearheaded to ensure SGK’s grounds remains pristine. Examples include planting more than 12,000 trees in just two years and collaborating with STERF on experimental grass. Accolades have also followed during this same period, as 2022 saw SGK become the first club in Denmark to win all three Danish championships, which it did again in 2023. Things faired slightly worse last year, when it was ‘only’ the men and the woman who won. Two of SGK’s golfers, Nanna and Emily, also competed at the Olympics last year in Paris, with the latter also representing the country in the PING Solheim Cup, a biennial women’s golf tournament during which the US competes against Europe. Of the three clubs within the club – the men’s club is The Butter Boys, the women’s ButterFlowers, and the mixed seniors is aptly named The Senior Club – each have its own sessions, tournaments, and events. Joining these groups requires a maximum handicap of 48 (54 for the seniors), but they are the opposite of elitist. The purpose is rather to create a golfing community that gives new golfers an opportunity to network and seasoned players a chance to compete with the best of the best in their respective divisions. The community feel inherent within SGK is on display further through its work with Rehab Golf, an initiative carried out alongside the Danish Handicap Federation, the Brain Injury Association, and the Danish Golf Union to create opportunities for people with mobility disabilities to get involved in the sport. A representative for the club told us: “Golf as a rehabilitation tool helps strengthen the body’s muscles and improves balance. It also offers physical activity, fresh air, and community participation.” SGK is equally passionate about providing opportunities for the youth, seen through its collaboration with Housing Matters on an after-school programme introducing golf to students. Run annually, classes have the chance to complete a nine-week training course in the afternoons, improving their golf and social skills simultaneously. In the three years since the initiative has been running, more than 200 students have partaken, in turn resulting in SGK currently having around 140 members under the age of 18. Ultimately, all of this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to outlining the reasons behind us recognising Smørum Golfklub as the Best Golf Club 2025 – Denmark.
