European CEO of the Year Awards 2026

European CEO of the Year Awards 2026 Edge Computing Innovator of the Year 2026: Fabrizio Del Maffeo & Best Energy-Efficient Edge AI Acceleration Platform 2026 Building high performance, high efficiency, affordable inference silicon, Axelera AI was founded on the basis that all data has the ability to add value to a business, government, or consumer, but only if there is a fundamental change in how that hardware was created. Rather than targeting data centres and cloud providers, the company started at the edge, working within a very specific set of constraints that allowed it to create something that allowed it to deliver the highest throughput per watt available. Fabrizio Del Maffeo, its celebrated CEO, caught up with us for more. Getting its start in spaces that demand near-zero latency and low power consumption, and which have limited connectivity, Axelera AI’s proprietary digital in-memory compute was designed as the key to unlock the value that data can add. This architecture was then made infinitely programmable through a software stack that is both user friendly and which supports nearly any model anyone can create, and allow it to run with accuracy and performance. Today, it is deployed across embedded, edge, and server products alike. Fabrizio’s role in the company’s journey has been integral, and his decision to leave the corporate leadership in 2021 and incubate Axelera AI has, five years later, resulted in employees in more than 22 countries and over 600 customers worldwide. Even before he was a CEO driving these numbers, Fabrizio was solving problems, beginning with the customer’s pain as his starting point and then working backwards to find the technology to solve it. Beginning his career in software, including roles at Accenture, Advantech, and Asus, Fabrizio complemented these roles with a master’s in telecommunications engineering and extensive training in mergers and acquisitions at London Business School. A turning point in his career came in 2018, when Fabrizio worked with Intel to bring the first AI accelerator to the market. That project exposed something this future CEO would dedicate his next chapter to solving: the hardware processing a world drowning in data was fundamentally broken. Expensive, hard to programme, and demanding an enormous investment before anything could be put into production, hardware was a barrier reserved for the elite. Software, meanwhile, was free. Fabrizio’s drive to bridge that gap is the reason why Axelera AI exists today, and why it is helping its customers as they change the world, accelerate productivity, and improve human safety, to name just a handful. Irrespective of the customer or the specific problem they are looking to solve, the team behind Axelera are always in execution and operational excellence mode, adopting tools like the latest AI developments into their workflows to speed up what they can deliver to customers. These include AxeleraScript (AxScript), which was recently introduced to shorten the amount of time it took the company to support new models – from weeks down to just one day. This is the start of what Fabrizio believes is the real democratisation of AI. Offering its customers the unique chance to run their own AI applications on their premises, all from a powerful, low-energy, costeffective hardware, this first-of-its-kind advancement is set to for imminent release to Axelera AI’s developers, allowing them to benefit from what the team here are doing internally. This, however, is just the beginning, and Fabrizio told us of the exciting roadmap his team are working hard to deliver. Fabrizio explained: “Our next-gen architecture is available, and our software stack continues to evolve, including the release of Axelera Wingman, and an agentic coding assistant that also helps optimise applications.” He added: “We are really excited about what the rest of the year has in store!” Fabrizio remains committed to bringing all of the company’s ideas to life, and seeing though what he started five years ago. Whilst it has not always been easy for Fabrizio, he is incredibly proud of Axelera AI and the step forward it stands for in the world of AI hardware and edge AI. Helping move the discourse around this technology away from energy and the power grid to focusing instead on what companies and consumers actually want from their AI solutions, the company is still only just starting out on what its CEO hopes will be a generational journey, one that can unleash hundreds of billions in value to investors, employers, and the whole ecosystem.
