European Enterprise Awards 2023

Jul22493 27. A tremendous small business that has been operating since 1953, Driftautomatik Daab AB began life manufacturing electronic components more than 70 years ago as a subsidiary of Jourmontör, a company now owned by Securitas. The company is proud to have developed into a holistic service provider, and today specialises in all things electric, as well offering control engineering and ventilation services throughout Stockholm and the surrounding areas. We catch up with the company’s resident ventilation and climate expert Tomas Johansson, who tells us more about the business. Driftautomatik is an exceptional installer, service provider, and contractor, leveraging considerable experience within the automation industry to carry out an array of a jobs, with a team of travel fitters also available to carry out a troubleshooting service and rebuild any on-site existing control equipment. Every service undertaken by the company is done so in close partnership with the client, the results of which yield a product that both parties are wholly satisfied with. With 70 years of experience to boot, the business has refined its services through decades of continuous improvement, offering a unique range of professional skills that are sure to exceed expectations. The business works closely with leading real estate companies such as Vasakronan, AMF, and KLP, in addition to a host of other contractors of various sizes, with the same high calibre service afforded across the board, regardless of the scale of the project. In a landscape where many industry professionals lack the necessary knowledge and quality that is expected of them, Driftautomatik has carved a name for itself through an exceptional portfolio of clients and services, resisting the trend adopted by similar firms to expand as much as possible, rather doubling down on its knowledge and quality, much to the delight of the thousands of satisfied customers it has worked with over the years. While 70 years have brought with them a series of changes and shifts, Tomas believes the industry today to largely be the same as it was, except for the technological developments and newfound emphasis on recycling and sustainable methods. Since the firm carries out a range of services, when construction projects are slow, there is often plenty of service jobs that need doing, and vice versa, providing a steady flow and opportunities for the team to constantly renew their competencies and follow industry trends. Even during the pandemic, homes still needed heating/ cooling and electricity to run, so the turnover was steady, and Tomas is pleased that business has picked up again in the years since. What makes Driftautomatik’s services truly unique and sustainable in the long-term is its merging of new and veteran employees, with both of these groups able to learn from the other to nurture an environment that is supportive, understanding, and positive. Standards are high across all elements of the business, and this is something that is expected of new starters too, as Tomas explains. The reason for this is that the portfolio of renowned real estate clients that the company has amassed expect nothing less than the best, thus service with a smile and an accommodating demeanour go a long way when dealing with properties that have some of the highest rents in Stockholm. Ultimately, much of Driftautomatik’s success can be attributed to its Swedish location, operating in a country that places chief emphasis on the environment and energy recovery, increasingly investing in better systems that are not only more efficient, but also environmentally beneficial, allowing the business to simultaneously keep costs down and make a positive impact towards slowing the effects of climate change. The same can be said for Europe more broadly, a continent that remains united in its quest to curb climate change by pioneering new and innovative developments in the field of renewable energy. Renewable energy is almost certainly the future of the industry, and as Tomas tells us, “we don't know what will happen in the future, but it seems to lean towards more energy recovery with different solutions, such as solar energy and more efficient air units that draw less power.” Since poorly serviced air units use more power, servicing becomes increasingly important and could save property owners thousands every year. Stockholm’s pronounced emphasis on being a city of culture with more restaurants and bars is too beneficial for Driftautomatik Daab AB, as it can leverage its skill fitting large kitchen ventilation systems, underpinning its adaptability and continued relevance after more than 70 years.
