German Business Awards 2022

56 EU BUSINESS NEWS / German Business Awards 2022 Sep22554 The Institute of Computer Vision and Applied Computer Sciences (IBaI) has been at the epicentre of computer science advancements for over 20 years. Headed by Professor Petra Perner, IBaI has worked on a wealth of ground-breaking projects, and has garnered international recognition for its contributions to the field. Established in 1995, The Institute of Computer Vision and Applied Computer Sciences (IBaI) is a hub for technological innovation. The institution conducts basic and applied research in several areas, including computer vision, data mining, machine learning, and image databases, with projects including the development of theoretical methods for artificial intelligence, case-based reasoning, image and signal classification, data mining, computer vision, clustering, and more. Additionally, the institute develops computerised methods and techniques for new processes, products, and services. IBaI’s innovations have been protected by legal patents, and its work has been published in a number of scientific publications, with Professor Petra Perner, Director, being requested as a speaker in a multitude of research fields and disciplines. Moreover, IBaI’s projects are renowned for their quality, combining high-class research with the elements of application. This is largely in part thanks to Professor Perner’s extensive experience in leading national and international research projects for which she has received a multitude of awards. Consequently, IBaI has three flagship products: Decision Master, a data mining tool; Hep-2 PAD, an automatic microscopic cell image analysis system for Hep-2 cells that is used in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases; and an automatic image analysis system for the diagnosis of degenerative brain diseases. In addition to this, the institute is running three conferences – the Industrial Conference on Data Mining, the International Conference on Machine Learning and Data Mining, and the International Conference on Mass Data Analysis of Images and Signals – with the goal being to unite researchers from across the globe. Each of these projects have played a fundamental role in IBaI’s global success, as they have enabled the institute to remain ahead of the industry’s trends. For example, biometrics are now vital to most technology products, and statistics showing a global trend towards biometrics, it is clear to see why institutes would want to optimise this area. IBaI is currently working on a number of projects in this field, with one aiming to enhance iris recognition for medical and security purposes. Such projects and developments are shaped by IBaI’s hard-working and highly talented team, who boast an abundance of experience in computer science, image interpretation, and data mining. It is also imperative that team members are flexible and adaptable, maintaining good communication amongst the team and its customers. Additionally, IBaI has worked to create a workforce that prioritises ethics and the organisation’s ethos; the team must understand the importance of loyalty and the institute’s philosophy. In and outside of the institute’s offices, the team serve as a representation of IBaI and its work, and therefore, they need to embody respect and integrity. Going forward, IBaI has a plethora of exciting plans in store. It will be working on the development of tools for the cognitive aspects of object recognition – using texture as an example – which will make image interpretation closer to that of a human’s understanding e.g. for medical tissue analysis and interpretation. IBaI will also be further developing its data mining tool, Decision Master and Netlog - a tool for Logfile analysis is also still a trend. For B2ML production (B2ML-E-Business to Manufacturing) IBaI is further developing method and techniques for making tailor made cloth via the internet.
