Irish Enterprise Awards 2023

Aug22136 Not All Heroes Wear Capes PCI College was established in 1991, by Liam McCarthy and Josephine Murphy, with the aim to provide students with a broad education in counselling and psychotherapy. It has been in collaboration with Middlesex University since 2001 to deliver students quality training to provide them with the right tools to help those in society that may be struggling with their mental health. When PCI College began to provide its services, mental health wasn’t on the political, media, or public agenda in Ireland, therefore the profession wasn’t acknowledged as important nor necessary. Liam and Josephine used their passion to drive change in the matter. PCI College, at the time known as Personal Counselling Institute, helped begin the process of pushing for counselling/ psychotherapy to be valued like the other helping professions. The need for professionals in this field of work continues to rise, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. People are experiencing depression, anxiety, addiction, suicide, relationship difficulties, and so much more. Struggling with mental health can feel very lonely at times and having access to support serves as the torch in what seems like a never-ending dark tunnel. With the right support system, things can get better. Students that aspire to become counsellors or psychotherapists are aware of the responsibility that these roles come with, therefore the training that they undergo needs to set a strong foundation for their future. PCI College prides itself on being able to provide high quality teaching, which can be seen in its growing cohort of qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, and other therapeutic professionals. PCI College offers an integrative approach to counselling and psychotherapy. Students are provided with professional and personal development through intensive training. They are introduced to all the main theorists and are offered the opportunity to dive into important topics like loss, sexuality, and more. The key factors that drive students to choose PCI College are its wide coverage training, together with the delivery of high quality and student friendly teaching. PCI College’s approach has recently been recognised and it now holds the title of Counselling & Psychotherapy Course Provider of the Year 2023. “Our mission is to empower our learners to fulfil their potential by delivering robust contemporary training in mental wellbeing by inspiring development of emotional and cognitive knowledge and effective practice skills to the benefit of society.” PCI College offers a wide range of high-quality academic programmes. It is part of the small number of private colleges in Ireland that provides University validated programmes which are internationally recognised. Some of those are: BSc (Honours) in Counselling and Psychotherapy degree accredited by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), master’s level programmes in Child and Adolescent Counselling and Psychotherapeutic, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Addiction Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as other professional certificates. Liam McCarthy and Josephine Murphy founded PCI College over 30 years ago to provide high academic standards while also making training accessible to everyone. Today that continues to be at the heart of what the team at PCI College does. As Liam passed away a couple of years ago, the Liam McCarthy Scholarship began in his memory. It offers financial support for one person each year to complete the BSc (Honours) Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy – this is open to those who don’t have a primary undergraduate degree. PCI College offers students a solid foundation to prepare them for their future ahead in an industry that is very much needed. The work that its founders began over 30 years ago continues to make a positive impact as students become professionals, ready to help guide those who are struggling and are in need of support.
