Polish Business Awards 2025 Aviation Sector Leader 2025 Poland is investing at an unprecedented scale in its aviation infrastructure—the largest program of modernization and expansion of airport infrastructure in the country's history is currently underway, totaling over €11.9 billion (PLN 50 billion). This includes approximately €10.2 billion (PLN 43 billion) allocated to the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny - CPK (Central Transportation Hub) and an additional €1.7 billion (PLN 7 billion) dedicated to expanding Warsaw Chopin Airport and regional airports. We learn more from Anna Dermont in light of this prestigious award. Leading Europe's Aviation Growth In the first quarter of 2025, Poland emerged as one of Europe's leaders in passenger traffic growth, achieving an impressive +15.4% year-on-year, which is 3.5 times higher than the EU average (+4.3%). While many regional airports across Europe still have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, Poland is actively building, modernizing, and forging ahead. In 2024, Polish airports handled over 59.5 million passengers (+15% year-on-year, +22% vs. 2019), and this dynamic growth is expected to continue throughout this year. Warsaw Chopin Airport: A Gateway to Europe Warsaw Chopin Airport is one of the most iconic and recognizable brands in Poland, well known not only nationwide but throughout Central and Eastern Europe. For over 90 years, it has been a gateway connecting Poland to Europe and the wider world, welcoming hundreds of millions of passengers. As Poland's leading airport, Warsaw Chopin Airport handled more than 21 million passengers last year, and we're poised to achieve even greater numbers this year, growing steadily at around 13% year-onyear. In May, June, and July, we surpassed a remarkable milestone— over 2 million passengers each month, with daily peaks reaching as high as 85,000 travelers. Modernization to Meet Growing Demand These record-breaking figures compel us to continuously modernize and enhance our infrastructure to better serve both passengers and airline partners. Expanding our transfer capacities is essential as we build and prepare passenger volumes for the Central Transport Hub (Centralny Port Komunikacyjny - CPK), which will replace Warsaw Chopin Airport in 2032. Some modernization projects are already well underway. We have initiated the expansion of our aircraft parking spaces, and the new apron will soon be operational. Additionally, we're finalizing a tender to acquire 15 new CT scanners, significantly enhancing passenger experience by speeding up security checks. Currently, our catalogue includes 27 investment projects, designed to remain flexible and responsive, adapting dynamically to passenger growth and evolving infrastructure requirements. Strategic Importance and Economic Impact Every new monthly passenger record underscores Warsaw Chopin Airport’s increasing significance within Europe's aviation landscape. To solidify and expand our prominent regional position, strategic investments are crucial. The modernization of Warsaw Chopin Airport isn't just addressing infrastructure limitations—it’s actively creating opportunities and laying a robust foundation for the swift development of the CPK. Without these investments, Poland risks losing approximately 32 million passengers to neighboring airports such as Prague, Vienna, and Berlin. Opponents of our modernization plans, intentionally or not, ultimately support our competitors, causing irreversible losses. Our modernization strategy ensures that equipment and infrastructure components can later be seamlessly integrated into CPK or other Polish airports, maximizing value and reducing waste. Even in the unlikely scenario that these investments don't pay off directly, their total cost would still be 30 times less than the economic losses incurred by diverting 32 million passengers elsewhere. According to ACI Europe data, this would translate into roughly PLN 30 billion lost to Poland’s economy. Commitment to Sustainability and ESG Goals Warsaw Chopin Airport also plays a vital role within the PPL Capital Group, comprising companies active in aviation trade and services. Sustainability and decarbonization are integral to our operations, aligning with our ambitious ESG strategy. In fact, since July, fuel providers at Chopin Airport have begun offering Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), directly aiding carriers in reducing their carbon footprint. A Leader Today, Shaping the Future As a local trendsetter, Warsaw Chopin Airport naturally assumes leadership in Poland and throughout the Central and Eastern European region. Recognition from the EU Business Awards highlights our growing influence—an influence that will persist even after transitioning air traffic to the CPK. With a rich over 90-year history behind us and a bright future ahead, we extend our deepest gratitude to all our passengers for their enduring trust and continuous support. Polish Business Awards 2025 A technology company specialising in applications and services within areas such as physics simulation, video game creation, sound synthesis, and modern graphics rendering, Komires is based in Wrocław, one of Poland’s largest and most historically significant cities. Reflecting the diversity and desire to innovate embodied in its surroundings – Wrocław is a university city and thus one of the most youth-oriented regions in the entire country – Komires is a forward-thinking operation and entirely unique in the current market. “Our main product is an advanced, modern, multi-platform, high-performance 3D physics environment delivered under Matali Physics brand”, explained Sławomir. “Matali Physics is mostly based on our research and development works in various fields related to the creation of computer games.” There is currently no equivalent of Matali Physics, which was the first brand to introduce this idea of the 3D physics environment – discussed further below – five years ago, this during the release of version 5.5 of the platform. Having just released Matali Physics version 6.9, representing the culmination of almost 18 months of work for Sławomir and the team, Komires’ status as an innovator is set in stone. The company is essentially paving the way for a novel approach to creating 3D computer games, with its cutting-edge methods in 3D physics simulation – which is important in various fields of technology, from computer games to robotics – helping to break down barriers and encourage the industry to rethink what is actually possible. Before we go any further, to fully comprehend the scope of the work Komires carries out, it Best Physics Simulation Software Company 2025 Poland is a nation at the forefront of the international video games industry, with its balance of quality and creativity seen through companies like CD Projekt Red and acclaimed titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3. Outside of these global brands, there are many much smaller but equally impressive companies operating in this space, including Komires Sp. z o.o., an LLC company focused on delivering highquality, user-friendly solutions to the industry. Sławomir Kozioł, a software architect and Komires’ long-standing CEO, was on hand for more. AIS-Jul25174 pays to understand some of the key terms that define its activities: 3D physics engine, 3D game engine, and 3D physics environment. These are often used interchangeably, but, as Sławomir clarified, refer to solutions that are dramatically different. First, a 3D physics engine is a piece of computer software that provides an approximate simulation of certain 3D physical systems, like soft-body dynamics and fluid dynamics. This is used for video games, as well as for CGI effects in movies and TV shows. On the other hand, a 3D game engine is a software framework designed to develop 3D video games, with this generally including relevant libraries and digital support programs. A 3D physics environment – which is what Komires first introduced in 2020 – is described by Sławomir himself as: “A total multimedia solution integrating physics simulation, graphics, sound, and music into a whole, driven solely by 3D physics simulation in every aspect.” Unlike other solutions, the 3D physics environment is based entirely on 3D physics simulation and physics-driven technologies, with every element, from scenes and animations to cursors and text, created and controlled via the 3D physics engine. Going further, Sławomir shared: “In this 3D physics environment, physics simulation is a key element of the system, not one of many hosted elements. I would like to point out that the 3D physics environment is not a 3D game engine – the 3D physics environment can be used to create 3D computer games, in this aspect it resembles a 3D game engine, but this is one of many applications. For example, a 3D physics environment naturally creates a GUI (graphical user interface) without additional solutions or modules.” When it comes to 3D physics simulation software, the specific area for which the company has been recognised with this award, Komires greatest achievement to date is the progress it has made in realtime object scaling, animation, and physical AI. Within its 3D physics engine, users are able to scale single objects as well as the hierarchies attached to them, including those affected by constraints, correctly and in real time. This offers a variety of use cases, such as simulating plant and animal growth, changing the size of inanimate objects, and executing a whole range of special effects. Sławomir added: “With our physics-based behavioural animations you can create natural, arbitrary motion sequences without the use of data derived from motion capture systems, and without the need to specify every detail of object’s motion.” The result is that physics objects can navigate in a changing
7. Best Physics Simulation Software Company 2025 environment without the need for predefined motion paths and navigation meshes. “Our physical AI gives you possibility to simulate ‘living’ environments where objects realise predetermined activities and at the same time retain the ability to improvise and determine their own actions, of course to a certain extent.” This is a lot to digest, so, providing an overview of what it is that sets Komires apart, Sławomir summarised: “We develop cutting-edge technology with a different perspective on 3D physics simulation and its role in controlling the movement, behaviour, state, sound, and visual aspects of objects. In our approach, physics simulation is a key element of the system, not one of many hosted elements.” In this way, the company is entirely unique and able to offer an experience that nobody else in this space can currently match. Preserving what it is that makes it such a standout business is one of the most difficult tasks Komires has, especially given this in an industry of shifting trends. It is the opinion of the team here that robotics and 3D physics simulations will become increasingly linked over the coming years, as well that the importance of 3D physics environments in computer games and other such industries will continue to grow. By continuously refining its solution to support this development, Komires is positioned favourably for growth. Outside of its physics simulation solution, the growth Komires and Matali Physics seeks is something left up to its team, individuals whose skill sets come together to create a united front capable of achieving anything. Spurring this on is the agile methodology used in a project management setting, with this seeing the team able to access a wide range of information to continue honing both their service delivery and their skills. Finally, touching on the next steps for the company, Sławomir divulged: “We have a big focus on showing the full potential of the 3D physics environment in creating 3D computer games, something that started with Matali Physics 6.0.” Additionally, The remainder of 2025 will bring more exciting updates to Matali Physics’ environment, showcasing another fragment of the animation possibilities changing this space forever. If it is innovation and progress we are looking to recognise in our inaugural edition of the Polish Business Awards 2025, then Komires Sp. z o.o. ticks all the boxes, with its groundbreaking work in physics simulations – where it showcases infinite possibilities and leverages a user-centric design – making it more than fitting of being recognised as the Best Physics Simulation Software Company 2025 in this programme. Aug22136 11. Abris-backed Scanmed buys Polish healthcare business Acquisition of Centrum Rehabilitacji will strengthen Scanmed’s transition to become the largest independent healthcare provider in Poland Abris Capital Partners (“Abris”), the ESG transformation specialist private equity investor and B Corp, has supported Scanmed, a Polish healthcare business, in acquiring 100% of the shares in Centrum Rehabilitacji Sp. z o.o., a fast-growing rehabilitation provider in Poland. The acquisition follows that of MedLux in November, and is part of Abris’ strategy to create the leading independent medical provider in Poland. Centrum Rehabilitacji runs its centre in Chorzów, offering comprehensive rehabilitation treatment services, including manual therapy, physical therapy and rehabilitation programmes. The company has been providing medical services for over 20 years, treating more than 20,000 patients annually. Centrum Rehabilitacji boasts a strong team therapists and doctors implementing a modern and comprehensive cardiac care programme. Sylwester Urbanek, Investment Director at Abris Capital Partners, commented: “The acquisition of Centrum Rehabilitacji is another step in our ambitious buy-and-build strategy for Scanmed. This is the second acquisition in recent months and the third since our investment in Scanmed. Our goal is to build a medical group providing modern and comprehensive patient care. We are delighted to welcome Centrum Rehabilitacji on board and we look forward to continuing to build the quality of care we provide in key therapeutic areas.” The acquisition will significantly strengthen the implementation of the Scanmed's strategy in building the highest standards of cardiology in Poland, in particular under Coordinated Specialized Care (KOS-Zawał). This programme focuses on supplementing hospitalisation with constant cardiac care and rehabilitation, and has a mortality rate up to two times lower than seen in patients that do not receive such care. Abris acquired Scanmed in 2020 with a plan to build a local healthcare champion by improving and growing the group’s service offering in areas including cardiology, oncology, orthopedics and ophthalmology, and by expanding its country-wide geographic coverage. In 2023, the group – which is considered one of Poland’s most trusted healthcare providers – doubled its revenues and EBITDA. In addition to last year’s add-on of outpatient and rehabilitation business MedLux, Scanmed also completed the acquisition of cancer care provider ARS Medical at the end of 2022. Andrzej Podlipski, CEO of Scanmed, added: “Scanmed has been consistently expanding its offer of medical services for many years, in the areas of medical clinics and hospitals, addressing the most common medical challenges in our country. The acquisition of Centrum Rehabilitacji is an important element of our strategy to offer modern healthcare in Poland. Cardiology is developing towards solutions based on a combination of emergency treatment and rehabilitation care, which is why we want to provide our patients with access to coordinated care at the highest level and the widest possible range of therapies.” Healthcare is one of the five strategic sectors that Abris focuses on. Its strong fundamentals are underpinned by a rapidly ageing population in Poland and increasing governmental healthcare spending aimed at improving the quality of service and the comprehensiveness of care. Abris’ previous investments in the healthcare sector include Matexlab, a Swiss vendor of innovative aesthetic medicine products, and Dentotal Protect, the leading distributor of dental consumables, instruments and equipment in Romania and Bulgaria.
