The company works with clients ranging from online entrepreneurs to huge international marketplaces such as eBay and Shopify, supporting them by offering help navigating the increasingly global trade landscape. We caught up with AVASK’s award-winning CEO, Hatice Dönmez, for more on her role and its impact. Jul22546 her role as the company’s business operations and tax director, a responsibility she has held since joining AVASK in 2021. Prior to this, her career was shaped by a strong foundation in international commerce, technology, and operational strategy. Early on, this involved Hatice developing an understanding of how businesses scale across borders, especially within the complex regulatory environments that differ from region to region. In parallel to this education, Hatice began honing her expertise in tax advisory and tax law, engaging herself in operational processes involving multiple tax types. The hands-on experience this offered gave this future CEO all the knowledge she needed of the strategic and practical challenges that businesses face, eventually paving the way for her future as the head of an organisation specialising in this on an international scale. Concerning leadership, Hatice began to take roles where she was responsible for driving growth as well building structure. Her authority was boosted when she become certified as an e-commerce tax specialist, one of many professional training and continuous education initiatives she has completed over the years. Hatice’s progression to CEO after around 30 months at AVASK was therefore the next natural step for her career. With the knowledge and expertise of its CEO to boot, AVASK has enhanced its capabilities as a one-stop shop offering seamless crossborder e-commerce tax compliance, VAT and sales tax solutions, and EPR compliance to its clients. Its standing across these channels can be attributed in part to the strategic partnerships it fosters and the presence it boasts across industry events, both of which see it directly engage with its clients and address their real-world challenges. More important, however, is how it does this. One of the defining elements of AVASK’s approach is the pairing of its global subjectmatter experts with a proprietary technology suite. The balance of automated precision and personalised, local knowledge this offers is, in the eyes of the company, the most effective approach to these areas of focus. And it is again the duty of this German e-commerce tax expert CEO to uphold this, something which she takes great pride in. All these responsibilities feed into what Hatice calls an ‘expertise-driven empowerment’ style of leadership, whereby she adopts a valuesforward approach to encourage cooperation, discussion, and learning together. The result, she hopes, will be an international team aligned on top of a shared drive for technical excellence. It is clear Hatice expects more from her team than simply being tax or ERP experts, and they must instead enable growth. Her job as AVASK’s CEO is to provide them with the culture to do so. “Culture plays a central role. When people understand the ‘why’ behind what we do, they perform at their best.” Making this all the more important is the fact that the world of compliance is ever changing, so having something like a solid internal culture to hold on to in the midst of all of these shifts helps keep the team grounded and focused. Nevertheless, tackling these challenges is key for a company looking to remain one step ahead in its field, and this is why AVASK prides itself on an ability to act quickly. This has taken numerous forms over the years, from restructuring its processes to adopting the latest technologies. Exploring these shifts in more detail, Hatice told us: “Adapting to rapid regulatory change, such as DAC7 and new EPR schemes in Europe, led us to evolve from a ‘tax-focused’ firm to a ‘compliance-as-a-service provider’.
