Q&A: Navigating European Markets with Export Leader Barry Leahey MBE EU Business News- Q3 2025

Last year, Barry Leahey MBE – President of UK-based playground equipment manufacturer Playdale Playgrounds – was named Export Leader of the Year after being recognised by the Cabinet Office, championing UK exporters and receiving an MBE for services to international trade. Over the course of his career, he’s come to recognise what success looks like when navigating international markets. This is especially true in the post-Brexit world, where strategy, brand recognition and a willingness to adapt have become more important than ever. We spoke to Leahey to discover the lessons he’s learnt along the way, offering advice to UK manufacturers on how they can thrive in European markets. Since Brexit, how has your approach to trading with EU countries evolved? “Since Brexit, we have built on the high level of preparation that we had as a pre-Brexit risk register – moving into a phase of internal education around customs checks and compliance,” says Leahey. “Because of the changing business and legal landscape, we diversified our distributors in some territories. This was because some of our existing distributors could not work with the new norm in the same way that they used to.” What have been the biggest challenges for Playdale in maintaining strong relationships with European distributors or partners? “The most significant hurdle for Playdale – and I imagine other SMEs – is having the bandwidth and resources to understand exactly what the new logistical changes and laws mean for their industry,” says Leahey. “At Playdale, we have taken the time to learn how to use the tools and resources available to UK businesses to simplify the transition. “The logistics are a real challenge for SMEs – all the associated paperwork is definitely the biggest change for the sector. The way we have to trade with Europe is now different. However, Playdale was already dealing with the rest of the world on this basis, so it was easier for us to adapt to these changes,” Leahey explains. “We regularly talk to the government’s Department of Business and Trade team and attend webinars on important subjects, which help us get to grips with changes quickly.” Can you give an example of a specific EU country where Playdale has managed to grow its market share, and what you did to make that possible? “We have signed several strategic relationships in the Nordic countries, with both a school supplier and a hotel chain, which in turn have opened up greater opportunities in those markets,” confirms Leahey. “We were able to develop these relationships because we have a brand presence in the marketplace and a team that professionally follows-up, ensuring that we can get boots on the ground when needed.” How do you see the current political and economic climate in Europe influencing cross-border trade opportunities? “The current political and economic climate in Europe presents a mixed picture. While there is a risk of new regulations and protectionist measures, there are also opportunities for a company like Playdale that is well-prepared, focused on quality and aligned with the EU's long-term strategic goals on sustainability and resilience,” answers Leahey. “The key to responding to the political and economic climate will be to remain agile, monitor regulatory changes closely and leverage our strong brand reputation to navigate this evolving landscape.” What do UK exporters need to understand about differing regulatory environments within the EU today? “While the EU maintains a single market, Brexit has introduced a significant layer of complexity for UK exporters – the key takeaway is that you can no longer assume alignment,” Leahey explains. “You need to be aware of both passive divergence, such as the EU’s new General Product Safety Regulation – a significant change that the UK has not fully aligned with – and active regulatory changes.” What practical advice would you give to other UK manufacturers trying to scale exports into the EU in 2025? “The EU is a very competitive marketplace. During the COVID pandemic, it may have been tough for trade, but many countries had a progressive mindset during this time and honed their focus on digital marketing and manufacturing automation,” Leahey reflects. “The result of these sudden changes has made the landscape even more competitive. “Strategy-wise, that means I’d recommend strengthening your brand identity and being ready to adapt to international tastes and markets. In the future, politicians will continue to open more doors, but it will be up to British business leaders to work hard delivering on their individual business strategies in order to grow,” Leahey explains. “This is possible – Playdale is proof of that. But it all comes down to being analytical in your decision-making, setting out a clear strategy, exploring new opportunities in countries that you believe will be lucrative for your business sector and, after all that, it will come down to how much you want to make it work.” Bonus Question: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt when it comes to European trade so far in 2025? “While the initial Brexit transition was about adapting to a one-off change, the biggest lesson from 2025 has been that post-Brexit trade with the EU is a continuous process of adaptation,” Leahey says. “The regulatory environment is dynamic. Success hinges on a proactive approach to monitoring, understanding and complying with a rulebook that is constantly being updated by a bloc that you are no longer a part of. “The recent EU/UK ‘reset’ shows a willingness to reduce friction, but it also underscores the enduring reality that regulatory alignment is now a strategic choice, not a given.” 7. FEATURE About Barry Leahey MBE: President of Playdale Playgrounds since 2004, Barry Leahey MBE started his journey with Playdale as the Sales & Marketing Director. Responsible for introducing children abroad to Playdale’s innovative playground equipment, Barry’s driving influence is bringing laughter and play to children across the globe. Barry was awarded an MBE in 2017 for contributions to UK trade and exports. He has also been recognised as North West Director of the Year, Export Leader of the Year, features on the Daily Telegraph’s list of the UK’s Most Ambitious Business Leaders and is an active supporter of children’s charity NSPCC.

Enter miDiagnostics, a healthcare technology company redefining the future of diagnostics and quality control tests for biomanufacturing, is meeting this need by redefining the future of diagnostics. Its innovative solutions are particularly relevant for the growing field of cell and gene therapies, where precision, speed, and scalability are critical. Steering this forward-thinking firm is Dr. Katleen Verleysen, its CEO and a key figure in the life sciences sector. We caught up with Katleen below for more information, in the wake of her recent recognition in the European CEO of the Year Awards 2025. Jun25084 ImmunExpress, PharmaFluidics, and the Center for Medical Innovation. Every stage of Katleen’s professional journey has been a continuous learning experience – from producing early stage proof-ofconcepts to delivering scalable products. These moments have taught Katleen how to effectively navigate complexity, build performing teams centred around a shared vision, and translate cutting-edge science into tangible value for patients and healthcare systems alike. One of Katleen’s most recent endeavours has included entering the position of the new Chair of the Board of 4Tissue – a company on a mission to revolutionise breast reconstruction following breast cancer treatment through innovative regenerative medicine. Regardless of the project scope, Katleen leans upon her foundation of knowledge – acquired over two decades of hard work – to steer her decisions, guide her team, and achieve scientific excellence every step of the way. “I draw from this broad experience daily,” she told us. “My scientific background helps me engage deeply with R&D; my entrepreneurial path sharpens my strategic thinking; and my leadership journey has taught me that success depends on authenticity, resilience, and creating environments where people can thrive. In short, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about direction; it’s about grit, clarity and communication, and consistently showing up with purpose. That’s how I aim to lead and continue to grow.” Today, CEO Katleen stands at the helm of miDiagnostics, steering the team with an expert hand. miDiagnostics was founded in 2015, as a spin-out of the global nanoelectronics leader imec with a large scale strategic collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, a premier medical research facilitation. Now, the company is on a mission to redefine the future of diagnostics and quality control tests for biomanufacturing. 9. Best Health Screening Solutions CEO 2025 (Belgium): Katleen Verleysen

EU Business News- Q3 2025 “What began as a high-potential research initiative has evolved into a scalable, realworld solution that will become an integral part of advanced therapy workflows,” Katleen told us in reflection. “While we are still early in this journey, the foundation we are building is robust – aimed at lasting impact for both patients and the biopharmaceutical industry.” To ensure that its solutions benefit all – patients and professionals alike – miDiagnostics takes an approach rooted in co-creation. Rather than offering off-theshelf solutions, the company opts to build them alongside its partners, beginning each client engagement by first developing a deep, collaborative understanding of their specific needs, both scientific and operational. With this strategic approach, miDiagnostics does not merely work with its clientele, but works as one with them. At the heart of everything miDiagnostics does lies a deep commitment to people. Whether pushing the boundaries of diagnostic science, pivoting an entire business, or navigating complex ecosystems, the company has and always will champion an unfaltering dedication to promoting the human side of innovation. As Katleen explained: “Innovation only matters if it reaches patients, if it empowers teams, and if it transforms lives. That is the lens I apply to every decision I make as a CEO.” Katleen leads miDiagnostics with kindness, authenticity, and deep humanity. She believes that strong leadership does not begin with hierarchy or authority: it begins with the ability to connect, to listen with empathy, and to foster an environment in which people feel seen, respected, and empowered to contribute their very best. At the core of Katleen’s approach stands clear and transparent communication about the company’s vision, strategy, and most importantly, its values. With that clarity in place, Katleen has empowered miDiagnostics to build a foundation of trust – within the team and its broader ecosystem. This ecosystem is complex: comprising investors, project sponsors, commercialisation partners, suppliers, design houses, and more. Success in this networked climate is not merely about execution for miDiagnostics, but about alignment. For Katleen, it is about creating a win-win mindset, where every stakeholder feels as if they are part of something larger than themselves. “This can only be achieved through a leadership style that combines vision with humility; direction with openness; and strategy with compassion,” she informed us. “I believe in leading as a human first: showing up honestly, listening actively, and engaging others as equals. Ultimately, my goal as a leader is to help create not just high-performing teams, but purpose-driven communities, where people feel inspired to go beyond what they thought possible, because they believe in the mission and in each other.” Of course, the journey has not been without its challenges for miDiagnostics, though Katleen’s strategic, human-centric approach has driven the company forward even in the face of adversity. One of the most defining challenges Katleen has faced during her time at miDiagnostics has been navigating the transition from COVID-19 to a post-pandemic landscape. At the height of the pandemic, miDiagnostics developed one of the fastest, most accurate RT-qPCR tests on the market – a true benchmark in pointof-care diagnostics. When the urgency of the pandemic subsided, however, so too did the demand for such solutions. As with many diagnostic companies, miDiagnostics was faced with a stark reality: choose reinvention or risk irrelevancy. Whilst the industry moved en masse toward respiratory panels and STI testing, miDiagnostics made the deliberate and bold decision to pivot towards pharmaceutical services – focusing specifically on the field of sterility testing in cell and gene therapy, where their PCR platform can have a transformative impact. This pivot not only required technological reorientation, but also strong leadership through a period of great uncertainty. “Investors were understandably cautious,” Katleen recalled, “internal teams were anxious about the unknown and external stakeholders were divided in their expectations. Yet we remained committed to our vision, adapting quickly, communicating transparently, and making data-driven decisions to realign the organisation around a new, more sustainable direction. That strategic shift is now proving to be highly successful.” A second significant obstacle that miDiagnostics has navigated has been scaling its platform from lab-scale prototypes to industrial-grade, validated systems that can operate reliably at scale. Innovation within the field of diagnostics can be inconsistent, often stalling between proof-of-concept and real-world implementation. miDiagnostics, however, has made significant strives in this sphere by embracing multidisciplinary collaboration, conducting rigorous validation, and engaging world-class partners to accelerate industrialisation efforts, such as Thermo Fisher. Since joining miDiagnostics, Katleen has directly demonstrated that when an individual is willing to question their assumptions, adapt strategically, and lead with clarity, transformation not only becomes possible, but impactful. This attitude towards emerging obstacles has shaped Katleen’s approach, opened her eyes to the importance of authenticity and transparency in leadership – enabling her to better serve her team at miDiagnostics. “I believe we need to talk more openly about resilience in leadership,” she told us. “Not just celebrating success, but acknowledging the ambiguity, the pivots, and the tough calls that come with building something meaningful. True leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about being willing to listen, adapt, and bring others with you on the journey.” And for miDiagnostics, the journey is far from over; as we progress through 2025, the company is focused on expanding its pharmaceutical services offering – with a particular emphasis on ultra-fast, highperformance PCR sterility testing for CAR-T and other Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products. These are areas where demand for speed, reliability, and compliance is only increasing over time and, under Katleen’s expert guidance, miDiagnostics is wellpositioned to support that growth. As for Katleen, she has never been one to follow a formal career plan. Instead, the CEO has been fortunate to encounter opportunities throughout her journey, making conscious decisions based on where she currently is in life, the impact she believes she can make, and the time and energy she can commit to each project. These ventures are never financially motivated, instead driven by purpose – specifically the potential for science and technology to create meaningful change for patients and society. Equally important to Katleen is giving back. She believes it her responsibility to mentor the next generation of leaders – especially CEOs navigating the complex landscape of life sciences. Having walked the path from deep academic science to venture-backed entrepreneurship and executive leadership, Katleen recognises that sharing what she has learned and learning from them in return is one of the most meaningful ways she can contribute to shaping a future built on purpose and innovation. Moving forward, Katleen informed us that she will continue to observe the broader industry as it advances, keeping a close eye on specific areas of interest. She shared: “Looking ahead, I remain energised by the promise of cell and gene therapies to redefine the boundaries of medicine. I’m also increasingly intrigued by the frontiers of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and their broader implications for human health and society. These are not just intellectual results; they reflect a deep curiosity about the future of life, cognition, and connection.”

A unique offering in the cardiovascular health category, it follows therapeutic dosing aligned with clinical research, a rare practice in the natural health product space. PreCardix® is already helping thousands of Canadians manage their blood pressure and cardiovascular health naturally. In 2025 and beyond, Marealis aims to help even more people by expanding PreCardix® into new markets, and launching additional products on healthy aging and longevity. “We’re proud to say we’re not just following industry trends – we’re setting them,” Andreas told us. “Marealis is at the forefront of the marine byproduct innovation movement. What began as a niche idea – upcycling shrimp shells into functional ingredients – is now becoming an emerging global standard, with marine byproducts increasingly being utilised across sectors. We’re leading the way with patented innovation, high-end health products, and an uncompromising focus on sustainability and quality. We believe the future of marine biotech lies in turning waste into value. And we’re already proving that the future is here.” This exceptional work is made possible by what the Marealis team calls the Artic Advantage. Northern Norway is rich in fishery and aquaculture knowledge that feeds directly into biotech manufacturing and also ensures that the company maintains strategic access to pristine raw material, with Arctic shrimp that are fresher, cleaner, and superior in quality. Not only that, but the region nurtures innovation with a supportive ecosystem and world-class research and development capabilities, allowing Marealis to collaborate with institutions such as Nofima and the Arctic University of Tromsø in its R&D phases, while receiving grants from Innovation Norway that have played key parts in its product development and international expansion. This location has been instrumental in Marealis’ growth, enabling the team to move faster and aim higher. Continuing on this fast-moving trajectory, 2025 and 2026 are shaping up to be transformative years for Marealis. Looking ahead, the company has a number of exciting plans in the works, including the expansion of PreCardix® in the global market through strategic partnerships; strengthening its position as a global leader in Arctic shrimp shell powder; and launching new marine-based health products that are focused on longevity and healthy aging, in collaboration with fellow Norwegian innovators. Ultimately, Marealis hopes to see a global shift towards more daring innovations within marine biotech – projects that bring real impact and value, not just incremental change and raw material utilisation. The company can see the untapped potential of every shrimp shell, believing that science can transform byproducts into life-changing solutions. “We want the world to know that ‘Science from the Arctic Sea’ is more than a slogan – it’s our foundation,” Andreas concluded. “From cardiovascular support to sustainable ingredient supply, our work brings natural health solutions from Norway to the world. We’re honoured to be recognised as Norway’s Best Marine Biotechnology Company 2025. This award affirms our belief that doing business responsibly – while thinking globally – can create meaningful, measurable change.” Contact: Andreas Semmingsen Company: Marealis AS Web Address: www.marealis.com & www.precardix.ca May25150 Marealis: Pioneering Marine Biotechnology from the Arctic Sea

Jul22493 15. Opening its doors in August 1993, Smørum Golfklub (SGK) has spent the last 32 years as a pillar of both the local communities in Denmark and the wider golfing world. Guided by its motto: “Open to everyone – good enough for the best”, SGK is today the largest golf club in Denmark, with 51 holes spread across several courses and both indoor and outdoor putting greens. As if this was not enough already, SGK is also continuously evolving with the addition of attractive facilities designed to appeal to players of all levels. Below, we take a closer look at the club. Balancing a good social environment with world-class amenities, Smørum Golfklub has been designed to appeal to the golfer in everyone. Recognising that the sport is broad and thus appealing to all types of people, SGK serves newcomers and experienced professionals alike, offering everything from a ‘Pay & Play’ – where anyone can come in, hire equipment and balls, and either play on a nine-hole course or a pitchand-put six-hole course – to a fully-fledged membership option with course access based on ability. What sets SGK apart is not only the sheer amount of facilities it has, but also the quality underpinning them all. These range from a three-loop, 27-hole course through to a ninehole intermediate course and three putting greens. A covered driving range developed with TopTracer has also just been opened, complete with 69 covered bays adorned with TopTracer fenders. This, however, is not the only new addition to SGK as a shortgame area has also been developed recently, complete with a large approach green. Ongoing developments such as this have resulted in SGK going from 2,350 members to 2,850 members over the last five years, with a waiting list of approximately 280 already filling up ahead of 2026. Such an increase in memberships may cause questions about the preservation of the club’s environment, but a number of initiatives have been spearheaded to ensure SGK’s grounds remains pristine. Examples include planting more than 12,000 trees in just two years and collaborating with STERF on experimental grass. Accolades have also followed during this same period, as 2022 saw SGK become the first club in Denmark to win all three Danish championships, which it did again in 2023. Things faired slightly worse last year, when it was ‘only’ the men and the woman who won. Two of SGK’s golfers, Nanna and Emily, also competed at the Olympics last year in Paris, with the latter also representing the country in the PING Solheim Cup, a biennial women’s golf tournament during which the US competes against Europe. Of the three clubs within the club – the men’s club is The Butter Boys, the women’s ButterFlowers, and the mixed seniors is aptly named The Senior Club – each have its own sessions, tournaments, and events. Joining these groups requires a maximum handicap of 48 (54 for the seniors), but they are the opposite of elitist. The purpose is rather to create a golfing community that gives new golfers an opportunity to network and seasoned players a chance to compete with the best of the best in their respective divisions. The community feel inherent within SGK is on display further through its work with Rehab Golf, an initiative carried out alongside the Danish Handicap Federation, the Brain Injury Association, and the Danish Golf Union to create opportunities for people with mobility disabilities to get involved in the sport. A representative for the club told us: “Golf as a rehabilitation tool helps strengthen the body’s muscles and improves balance. It also offers physical activity, fresh air, and community participation.” SGK is equally passionate about providing opportunities for the youth, seen through its collaboration with Housing Matters on an after-school programme introducing golf to students. Run annually, classes have the chance to complete a nine-week training course in the afternoons, improving their golf and social skills simultaneously. In the three years since the initiative has been running, more than 200 students have partaken, in turn resulting in SGK currently having around 140 members under the age of 18. Ultimately, all of this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to outlining the reasons behind us recognising Smørum Golfklub as the Best Golf Club 2025 – Denmark.
