<p>Brot und Spiele, taken from the Ancient Roman dictum ‘Bread and Circuses’, is the only publishing house for short stories in the whole German-speaking world. For some reason, between the Rhine and Danube, young writers are not taken seriously until they have written a novel. We explode this Teutonic taboo by providing budding talents with their first book: a selection of their own stories. In our series Short Classics, we re-introduce forgotten writers from 1900 to a contemporary audience.</p>
