eID Easy Brings Ukraine’s Diia.Signature to the EU for Legally Valid Signing

eID Easy, an Estonian company founded in 2016, simplifies eID authentication and electronic signatures for websites. What Is Diia.Signature?

Diia.Signature is an electronic signature Ukrainians can activate in the Ukrainian state app, Diia, in one minute and immediately use to sign various documents. Designed for Ukrainian citizens and residents, it allows document signing directly from smartphones.

eID Easy is integrating Diia.Signature to expand its use outside Ukraine, facilitating cross-border transactions with the EU.

Why Diia.Signature Matters

Diia.Signature complies with EU standards, enabling Ukrainian users to sign legally recognized documents in both Ukraine and the EU. Since January 1, 2023, EU-qualified electronic signatures (EU QES) are recognized under Ukrainian law as equivalent to Ukrainian signatures. This recognition paves the way for mutual recognition between Ukrainian and EU QES, under discussion with the European Commission.

As Diia.Signature originates from a non-EU state, documents signed by Ukrainian users are legally binding in the EU under AdES status. This ensures strong legal recognition across borders for business and legal transactions in the EU.

How It Works

• Select Documents: The client selects one or more documents and chooses the Diia.Signature option.
• Verify Identity: The client verifies their identity via photo verification and a five-digit code in the Diia app.
• Sign the Document: The document is signed and legally valid in the EU.

The process is simple and eliminates the need for physical documents, making cross-border transactions more efficient. Diia.Signature ensures that Ukrainian citizens or residents can sign legally valid documents.

What About Diia.Signature’s Legal Recognition?

Diia.Signature is legally recognized in the EU as an Advanced Electronic Signature (AdES), allowing Ukrainian nationals to sign enforceable documents across borders. While it meets EU standards for security and identity verification, it is not equivalent to a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) under EU regulations.

In Ukraine, Diia.Signature is equivalent to a handwritten signature and holds full legal recognition. In the EU, while it is not equivalent to an EU QES, it still offers reliable legal enforceability as AdES, ensuring seamless document signing for businesses and individuals operating in both regions.

Who Can Benefit from Diia.Signature via eID Easy?

Ukrainian citizens and residents in the EU or working with EU-based businesses can now sign legally binding contracts with Diia.Signature through the eID Easy widget. EU businesses working with Ukrainian clients or partners can streamline their digital signing processes using this widget.
