<p>Rubins Johannes Spaans is a visual artist known for his experimental works concerning the interaction of light and matter and colour perception.</p>
<p>Initially trained in the traditional oil painting techniques of the old masters, in the last decade he combines the traditional Japanese Nihonga and the European classical painting techniques.</p>
<p>He works on large canvases of unprepared linen using only natural materials, such as charcoal, seawater, gallnuts, walnuts, earth, algae, lichens and mushrooms.</p>
<p>His works are characterized by their austere simplicity, their sincerity and unfeigned naturalness.</p>
<p>Japanese philosophy is deeply rooted in his life and work.</p>
